Pointe Shoe Fittings

What are the benefits of booking a pointe shoe fitting?

By booking an appointment in advance we can assure one of our expert fitters is available to dedicate the time and attention needed to assure you find the pointe shoes that will support you the most.

What happens during a pointe shoe fitting?

During your fitting, one of our expert fitters will assess your feet and address any concerns you may have. You will have the opportunity to try on multiple different styles of shoes and your fitter will help you determine which one is best suited for you.

Why are there so many different types/styles of pointe shoes?

Each dancer has unique feet and a multitude of different elements that need to be considered regarding the fit of their pointe shoes. Every style and brand reflect a unique combination of measurements, materials, and attributes that suit different types of feet and pointework needs. Our pointe shoe fitters are trained to find the most suitable options for a dancer’s foot among a wide variety of sizes, widths, brands, styles, and shank strengths.

How do I know if I am ready to go on pointe?

We highly recommend dancers are assessed and given approval to progress onto pointe by a qualified ballet teacher and/or a dance-specific physiotherapist. This ensures that a dancer’s technique and strength are at a level that will fully support them in pointe shoes.

Why is there such a wide range of prices for pointe shoes? Can I make my choice based on price?

The cost of a pointe shoe is largely affected by the materials used, such as synthetic materials or stretch fabrics. While different brands and styles may vary in price, the proper fit of a pointe shoe is paramount. We always aim to fit a dancer in the shoe that best suits their needs and we are diligent in ensuring our pointe shoes are competitively priced.

What accessories do I need for my pointe shoes?

This is largely determined by an assessment of the dancer’s foot and the preference of their teacher. Toe pads, toe spacers, lambswool, and additional padding can affect the fit of the shoe, so we recommend that you bring all your personal accessories to wear during your fitting. Additionally, pointe shoe ribbon, elastic and Stitch Kits can be purchased at the end of a fitting.

What should I wear/bring to my fitting?

We recommend wearing tights with a convertible foot or tight-fitting leggings or pants to your fitting, as your fitter will need to be able to see and assess the whole line of the leg on pointe. If it is your first pair of pointe shoes, feel free to wear your favourite leotard as well so you feel confident and beautiful! If you have experience on pointe, please bring your old pointe shoes as well as any padding or accessories you normally wear in your shoes.

How long do pointe shoe fittings usually take?

In order to ensure our fitters have ample time to assess the proper fit of your pointe shoes, each appointment is scheduled for 30 minutes.

What is the return policy for pointe shoes?

At Bodythings, we take pride in our pointe shoe fitting and will always work with your best interest in mind, as an ill-fitting pointe shoe can have serious consequences. Although our store policy is exchange or store credit, we will always accept returns for refund on unsewn and unworn pointe shoes because we understand how imperative finding the right pair is.

What if my teacher does not approve the pointe shoes I’ve been fitted in?

We absolutely respect that your teacher knows you best as an individual dancer and may have specific concerns or preferences in terms of the pointe shoes you wear. Respecting your teacher’s opinion, we are happy to re-book you for a follow-up fitting and can accept an exchange or refund on the original pointe shoe as long as they are unworn or unsewn. Additionally, we always welcome dance teachers to join their students for their fittings in store!

How long do pointe shoes last?

This depends on the individual. The shank strength of your pointe shoe, the strength of your feet and ankles, and the amount of pointe you do each week will all factor into the lifespan of your shoes. For a professional ballerina, a pair of pointe shoes may only last for one performance! However, for most dancers, pointe shoes can last up to a few months.

Can I book group pointe shoe fittings?

Absolutely! The more the merrier. If you would like to make a group pointe shoe fitting, please call us at (403) 278-5440 or send an email to sales@bodythings.com. Include your studio name, the number of dancers needing to be fit, and the date/time you are hoping to come in for.

Do I need to make an appointment every time I want to purchase new pointe shoes?

Dancer’s feet can change a lot over the course of their training and careers, so we generally recommend that if you are looking to change anything about your current pointe shoes (including size, width, and shank strength) or would like to try a different style or brand, that you book another fitting. If you are happy with your current pointe shoes and would like to purchase the exact same shoe again with no changes, then you do not need to make an appointment.

Are ribbons and elastics included with my purchase? How do I sew them on?

Ribbons and elastics will have to be purchased and sewn on separately. We offer regular and stretch ribbon options, pointe shoe elastic, and Stitch Kits, which can be purchased with your pointe shoes. Your dance teacher should be able to provide you with guidance on how to sew on your ribbons and elastics, however, there are also many video tutorials available online if you need more support. How a dancer sews on their ribbons and elastics can be very individualized, so it may take some experimenting to find what works best for you.

Do you offer pointe shoes in different colours or skin tones?

Many of the pointe shoe styles and brands we carry in store offer their pointe shoes in different tonal colours. As they would be a special order, we would require a pre-payment prior to placing the order.

What do I need to ask my dance teacher before my first pointe shoe appointment?

Once you are approved for pointe work, it is also good to ask your dance teacher whether you are allowed to use padding in your shoes (toe pads, Ouch Pouches, lambswool, etc), and if there are any types or brands of shoes that are not permitted.
